On Thursday, February 24, 2011, the Dicksie Bradley Bandy Memorial Lecture Series continues with Randy Patton, professor of history and Shaw Industries Distinguished Chair at Kennesaw University. This lecture is "Catherine Evans Whitener and the Tufting Industry" hosted by Dalton State College's Bandy Heritage Center. The theme for the series is "Crafting a Culture; Women, Weaving and Textiles in Northwest Georgia History". The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. in Room 105 of the James E. Brown Center on the DSC campus and is free and open to the public.

Raisin Hope Ride

Saul Raisin is proud to announce the fourth annual Raisin Hope Foundation Ride. Saul, a native of Dalton, suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a crash while racing professionally in Europe in 2006. Saul has fought back, recovered beyond his doctors' expectations, and now focuses his energy toward helping others with TBIs. In the last three years, over 1500 riders have participated in the Raisin Hope Foundation Rides.

This year's ride will take place on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 4th.

The ride will begin at Prater's Mill at 8 am.

There are 4 distance options: 60 miles, 40 miles, 15 miles, or 6 miles. All riders will enjoy a complimentary lunch and a chance to win one of several door prizes. All pre registered riders are guaranteed a t-shirt.

Sister Schubert Book Signing

In 1989, the entrepreneur now known to the world as "Sister Schubert", aka Patricia Barnes, was baking her soon to be famous Yeast rolls in the kitchen of her home in Troy, Alabama for her small catering business and for family and friends. She volunteered to donate some rolls, based on her grandmother's heirloom recipe for "Everlasting Rolls" to the holiday frozen food fair at her church. From 80 pans worth of orders to a 80,000 square foot state of the art facility that produces 1 million rolls per day, Sister Schubert has created quite a Roll Dynasty. Patricia released her first book Sister Schubert's Secret Bread Recipes in 1996, and her second book Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters in the fall of 2009. The proceeds of the books benefit the Barnes Family Foundation, which has donated more than 2.3 million dollars to charities, scholarships, historical preservation, and the creation of a home for abandoned children in the Ukraine.

The contest will run August 1st through midnight September 24th. The winner will recieve a $100 gift certificate to the Dalton restaurant of his/her choice. Come to the Dalton Freight Depot this Saturday, July 24th for the CD Release Party for Bluegrass Bands & Helping Hands, Volume 2! This is a FREE concert featuring bluegrass musicians, Earl Brackin at 7 pm and The Lou Wamp Band at 8 pm.

There will be face painting for children from 7 to 8:30 pm and concessions will be available for purchase throughout the evening. Proceeds from the sale of concessions and CDs will go to DOC-UP, the Dalton Organization of Churches United for People. DOC-UP is a non-profit orgainzation that uses its funds to help needy, unemployed families in the Dalton area pay their rent and utilities bills.

The first stage toward making that dream a reality will arrive this Saturday when the Dalton-Whitfield Planning Office will host a charrette to get public input on a proposed Arts & Cultural Overlay District that will be unveiled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the newly renovated Freight Depot at the intersection of Cuyler & South Depot Streets Downtown."

The festival is the first of its kind in Walker County and will include 10 hot air balloons, live music each day and a light show on September 19.
